SRJC STEM Building Awarded Project of the Year by ASCE

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) San Francisco Section has honored Brelje & Race with Project of the Year in the community access category for the new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Building at Santa Rosa Junior College.

About the Project

The $100 million Lindley Center for STEM Education adds a state-of-the-art academic building for the next generation of students at Santa Rosa Junior College. Redeveloping a central site on the historic campus, the 95,000 square foot, three story building features 34 classrooms and laboratories, open study areas, an innovation center to showcase new work, and a STEM success center, where academic support services are available to guide students in their educational journey. The project houses the Chemistry & Physics Department, Engineering & Applied Technology Department, MESA and HOPE programs, and mathematics classes.

Brelje & Race was engaged by SmithGroup, the project architect and primary design consultant, to provide engineering design for civil site improvements focused on demolition, grading, wet utilities, stormwater management, and constructability reviews. The project overcame numerous design constraints and challenges that arose during construction, including work disruptions and cost escalations related to the COVID-19 pandemic, emergent conditions on the constrained infill site, and weather-related construction delays.

About the Award

The ASCE San Francisco Section’s annual awards competition recognizes outstanding civil engineering projects from across the northern half of the state. A panel of distinguished judges drawn from the engineering field select projects for recognition in a diverse list of categories. ASCE will officially confer the award at the San Francisco Section’s annual meeting and awards ceremony on October 3rd at the San Francisco City Club.
